Mary was born at 'Silverwood', near Hororata where her parents farmed, later moving to Tiverton'. While living there, she attended Barrhill school travelling to classes each day, by pony. High School saw her become a boarder at Girls High in Ashburton, following which she managed the Sheffield and then the Waddington Stores. In 1938 Mary married Thomas Tizzard. Mary and Thomas had two daughters - Rosalie (deceased) and Rae. She celebrated her 90th Birthday 21 February 2003.

One only turns 90 once and when Mary Tizzard, a resident of Westmar House, Senior Care Centre, achieved that honour, she did it with style. As well as the usual birthday goodies, delicious food, a cake and gifts, Mary was entertained by her own personal piper. Fred Bull, of Sheffield played in the lounge at Westmar, for Mary, her friends and family. A quick glance at the assembled feet showed there was barely a toe not a tapping.

In 1938 Mary married Thomas Tizzard. Mary and Thomas had two daughters - Rosalie (deceased) and Rae. At this stage, until her retirement in fact, Mary had always been known as 'May'. Upon reaching retirement years and receiving a copy of her birth certificate, she discovered she was in fact 'Mary' and declared she wished to be called so!

Mary grew up in an era where homemaking skills were taught, practised and perfected. She was an expert cook, as well as baking beautifully, kept an immaculate home and gardened to show standard. Mary was also a talented dressmaker, including the production of wedding dresses when asked.

She thoroughly enjoyed ballroom dancing as a hobby and closely followed Highland Pipe Bands and their displays. In 1999 when Thomas died, Mary joined her daughter, Rae at their Whitehouse Restaurant then moving to Christchurch with them in 2001 when they sold the business. In November last year, Mary took up residence at Westmar, where she is enjoying the wonderful care and attention she has been receiving.

A very Happy Birthday, Mary, from the 'News'.
