MARGARET THOMPSON

Margaret Thompson is a South Islander, born and bred. She completed her BA at Otago University and then in successive years took an MA (Hons) in Geography at Canterbury University and completed her teacher training at Christchurch Teachers' Training College.

Margaret then began her teaching career with a year at Southbridge District High School followed by three years at Darfield High School, the beginning of a long association with the school. After concentrating on rearing three children, Margaret returned to teaching at Darfield High School in 1972, becoming Head of Commerce and Economics in 1975 and Senior Mistress in 1980. She retired in 1995 after a most successful career at the school.

With her long association with the school and the community, Margaret was the ideal person to write a book about the school's first 50 years. "School on the High Plains" has been a labour of love and as with all Margaret does, it bears the stamp of quality, thoroughness and dedication.

About 750 books have been produced by Hilton Press for the reunion.

Footnote: Those people lucky enough to attend the release of the book will have received a greater understanding of the personal involvement and time commitment of the author to complete this task. She admitted that she didn't rank the book was very high on ner list of priorities when she started, but it had dominated almost everything in her life for the next 18 months!

At the same time as compiling the book, Margaret has chaired the Tussock Square Committee, a further call on her time. Our community is very fortunate to be able to find such able volunteers in our midst.
