Formation of The Friends of Darfield Hospital

On May 22nd, 1984, Mollie Townshend called a Public Meeting after establishing a steering committee for the formation of The Friends of Darfield Hospital (became a Charitable Trust in 2001). Around $150,000 worth of donations later and the Friends have much to show for their foresightedness. They have been responsible for arranging funding to provide many patient comforts within the Hospital and are shortly due to officially open their most recent development.

After considering what would best suit patient requirements and what would be an aesthetically attractive addition to the Hospital building, it was decided to attach a sympathetically designed addition to the patients lounge. This addition provides glass dividing doors from the existing area, enabling the new section to be shut off for patient privacy or opened up into a light and airy space. A second set of glass doors opens onto an expansive and sunny decking overlooking the pleasant lawn and garden areas. In time fixed sun shading is planned for over the deck.

"Funding for the improvements over the years has come from many sources", said Marj White, the current 'Friends'
committee President. 'We are extremely grateful for the bequests we receive, as well as donations from private individuals, businesses and non-profit making clubs and organisations".

Donated professional time and careful investment as well as charitable grants have helped keep the current building extension totally debt free.
The 'Friends' are very satisfied with the new building and with the standard of tradesmanship and professionalism that designed and constructed it.

In June 1926 it was estimated that the hospital could be built for £3,500 and when the tenders were finally let, it was for the princely sum of £3,599.10.0. Marj paid tribute to the great committee of 19 she has the pleasure of working with and commented that some new younger faces would be a welcome addition to their ranks. In the meantime there are the drapes for the interior to organise as well as the sun shading to work towards before the 'Friends' embark upon any future projects.
