On the banks of the Liffey Stream in Lincoln Canterbury, stands a somewhat simple and unadorned weatherboard building. In spite of its plain appearance however, it shares a grand piece of history with two nearby libraries, for along with Akaroa and Little River, this library was built to celebrate the Coronation of King George V.
The site the library stands on - a 'half-moon' shaped piece of land of 32 perches adjoining a reserve - had been given by William Tod in 1873 to the "inhabitants of Lincoln School District for the purpose of a library and reading room" (cited in Lincoln & Districts Historical Society, 1994, p.17). The first library to be built on the site was sold and moved to make way for the new building.
Construction was enabled by a Government subsidy of £100, and the foundation stone was laid by Member of Parliament Mr. R.H.Rhodes. Although the date above the doorway clearly states 1911 (the year of the Coronation), records show the official opening, again by Mr Rhodes, took place on April 18th the following year. Opening celebrations in the library continued later in the day, with a social and dance in the Druids Hall.
A mere 30' x 16' with a 10' stud, the building continued to provide a library service for the area until early in the 1990's, at which time the collection moved to share premises with the Selwyn District Council Service Centre. Since then the Lincoln Coronation Library has no longer provided reading material, but holds instead all the items of childhood amusement that make up a toy library.
