SINCE opening half a decade ago, the Rolleston library has become an integral part of the local community.

The library celebrates its fifth birthday this month.

Selwyn District Public Libraries customer services manager Judith Wenborn said the library was a good meeting place. The town was growing so fast people often did not have anywhere to get to know their neighbours. "I think that it's a neutral meeting place. People can meet and get to know each other." This was an important function of libraries,Mrs Wenborn said.

.Other activities included pre-school story-time every Tuesday. "There's lots of happy busy noise."

The library had steadily grown since it opened, with approximately 50 to 60 new memberships a week, she said.

Five years ago, there was no library in Rolleston, and Darfield library was the busiest. Now Rolleston was just as busy, she said.

To celebrate their birthday and Christmas, the library was offering cake and sweets.

The library was also having a reading club over the holidays. Activity sheets for children were available and could be picked up from the library.
