This week the Canterbury Times profiles Leeston librarian Marilyn Begg.

How old are you?

I'm 51.

How long have you been a librarian?

Since I graduated. I started library work in 1975.

What made you want to be a librarian?

I didn't actually! I finished university and started applying for jobs. And the one I got was as a librarian.

What's the best thing about your job?

I like the book-buying side of it. Also, in a small community, you form good relationships with your borrowers. You get to meet a lot of people, too.

What's the worst thing about your job?

There aren't many bad things. Not enough time would be the only bad thing.

What other interests do you have?

I enjoy tramping and gardening. I usually go tramping around Canterbury and I did the Milford Track earlier this year. My garden is two acres and I'm planting native trees.

How long have you lived here?

I actually live in Springston and have done for nine years.

Where are you from originally?

From Timaru, but I went to Christchurch to study botany and ~*t'2s2i$y at Canterbury University.

I hoped to get a job in the science field after I graduated.

When did you start at the Leeston Library? Where did you work before that?

I started at Leeston in 1994. Before that I worked at the University of Canterbury Library, Canterbury Medical Library and Casebrook Intermediate School Library.

What family do you have living nearby?

My two sons are living at home at the moment, but the rest of my family are a bit further away. Some of them are in Timaru of course.

What are your plans for the future?

I'm quite happy to stay in Leeston. I have no plans to leave and I'm pretty happy with my job too.
