Caption

The Ellesmere County War Memorial is situated on the main street of Leeston. The inscription reads:

The Great War 1914-1919 In honour of the men from the County Of Ellesmere who gave their lives in the Great War.

"These, at the call of King and Country, left all that was dear to them, endured hardness, faced danger, and finally passed out of the sight of men by the path of duty and self-sacrifice, giving up their own lives that others might live in freedom." This monument was erected by the people of this county in grateful remembrance. Let those who come after see to it that their names be not forgotten.

The Memorial was unveiled on Sunday October 19, 1924, at 2.30pm by His Excellency Admiral of the Fleet, Viscount Jellico of Scarpa.
