Rifleman Daniel Henry Kempthorne - 24/491

Daniel was born 26 October 1894 in Greendale, the son of James and Margaret Henderson Kempthorne. Before enlisting Daniel was working at the Islington Freezing Works. He was 5ft 7 ¾ inches tall with a sallow complexion, brown eyes and brown hair. He had enlisted and was assigned to the New Zealand Rifle Brigade, B Company, 2nd Battalion. He had been in camp for two months prior to his death.

Daniel was admitted to Wellington Hospital on 8 July and his condition was described as dangerously ill suffering from measles, pneumonia, and bronchitis. Despite nursing care he died less than two weeks later on the 20 of July 1915. It had been feared that there was an outbreak of Meningitis in camp so great care was taken to clarify his cause of death. His body was sent south by ferry for his burial at St Saviours Anglican Churchyard, Templeton on the 24. He was accorded a Military Funeral leaving from his parent’s home in Templeton at 2.30pm. Lieutenant Livingstone represented the Defence Department and the firing party was provided by the 1st (Canterbury) Regiment. Daniel’s body was borne on a gun-carriage and men from his platoon acted as the bearers. Daniel is remembered on the Springston War Memorial and Roll of Honour.
