A soldier of the Anglo-Boer War

Reg No: 638, Surname: Derrett, George Cecil served firstly with the third Contingent in unit no 5 as a private. He sailed on the Knight Templar on 17 February 1900. His occupation was given as farmer, county of Selwyn and his next of Kin Mr E Derrett of Hororata.
He then re joined the Tenth Contingent as a Lieutenant in the South Island Regiment embarking on the Norfolk 19 April 1902. As before his occupation was given as farmer, Selwyn District of Hororata and his next of kin, father Mr Edwin Derrett.

17 feb 1900 the Timaru Herald reported him in No 1 Company the canterbury troop under Captain Rose.

From a letter written by Corporal Hayward, of Kitchener's Horse, dated March 31«t, and bearing the Krugersdorp post mark, we are permitted to make some extracts "I came across the Fourth Contingent, and I had a y&rn with some of them. The first man I saw was young Derrett from Horora'ta. I met him at Kroonstad. he had not seen much fighting as he had been sick ever since he landed."

He is listed as one of the returning troopers aboard the Victorian 23 feb 1901 as private G C Derrett Third Contingent of Hororata
